I worked with an interdisciplinary team to explore how instant messaging could be added to Mail without detracting from the application's primary objective: to receive and send email. Through constant design iterations, user testing, and product reviews we came to this light-weight integration. The feature is introduced to users through an overlay with bubbles pointing out areas for using the new feature. Conversations are each managed in their own tab, leveraging the existing tab system. I was the sole visual designer on the team and developed visual mockups, specifications and final image assets.
